Riding Terrain in Kenya: What to Expect on Two Wheels

A Land Built for Two Wheels (and a Bit of Dust)

Kenya isn’t just beautiful — it’s a rider’s paradise.
The country is packed with diverse terrain: dusty plains, forest tracks, rolling hills, and more.
Each region offers something different, and our routes are carefully designed to show you the most stunning, exciting, and remote areas possible.

While not every tour includes all types of terrain, these are the main road and surface types you’ll find across Kenya.
You’ll encounter a mix — and each one brings its own flavor of adventure.

1. Murram Roads (Kenya’s Classic Red Dirt Tracks)

Murram roads are made from compacted red clay soil and are the backbone of Kenya’s rural road system. They’re a dream to ride when dry — and a bit cheeky when wet.

Expect:

  • Fast, flowing sections with great visibility

  • Good grip when dry, sticky when wet

  • Endless scenery and that signature red dust

2. Gravel Roads (Loose, Rough, and Scenic)

Gravel roads vary from smooth to chunky, and you’ll ride them especially in hilly or remote zones. They add a bit of technical spice to your day.

Expect:

  • Loose stones, occasional ruts

  • Fun, challenging sections

  • Big open views across landscapes

3. Fesh Fesh (Fine, Powdery Dust – Kenya’s Secret Sauce)

Fesh fesh is ultra-fine dust that looks solid but rides like deep sand. It’s infamous in rally circles and gives riders a proper challenge.

Expect:

  • Wobble, drift, and float — like riding on talcum powder

  • Slow, controlled navigation

  • Pure rally vibes, with coaching from our team

We won’t throw you in unprepared — we talk you through it, guide you through it, and it’s always a highlight for thrill-seekers.

4. Tarmac (Smooth Sections Between the Adventure)

Yes, we also ride plenty of tarmac roads in Kenya — and they’re part of what makes the experience so varied and rewarding.

Some tarmac is full of potholes, which makes for a fun challenge and a bit of tactical riding.
Other sections? They’re new, wide, smooth, and made for you to cruise, breathe, and take in jaw-dropping views.

Expect:

  • Long winding stretches through mountains, farmland, and coastlines

  • Pothole sections that keep you sharp

  • Stunning landscapes that open up right in front of you

  • That satisfying “lean and roll” rhythm riders love

These roads aren’t just a way to get from A to B — they’re part of the ride, and we make sure you get the best out of them.

5. Trail & Bush Riding (Our Private Access Routes)

Thanks to long-standing local relationships, we have access to trails on unique area’s, forest zones, and routes no one else usually rides. These range from single tracks to forgotten service roads and wildlife corridors.

Expect:

  • Epic scenery

  • Wildlife sightings

  • That real “out there” feeling

This is where Safari MotoXpedition becomes truly unique — with access no one else has.
